About Me

My Journey Thus Far

My name is Caroline Vaniska and I am a junior secondary education and history major at Clemson University. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but my family moved to Hilton Head, South Carolina when I was very young. Growing up in SC you are either a Gamecock or a Tiger. I honestly did not care for either school until my older brother Michael chose to enroll at Clemson University when I was a junior in high school. During my senior year, a friend and I went up to Clemson to visit him and I fell in love with the campus. After that trip I decided I wanted to go Clemson. One thing I am known for is my love to help others; I will go out of the way to help out a friend. Another thing I am known for is my positivity I see in every situation. Seeing the silver lining in every situation is what I have the knack for. I have faced many problems in my life, but I am the best at solving conflict problems. I am good at seeing both sides of an argument and being able to come to a compromise. I have been a babysitter, camp counselor, hostess, and sales associate, but my favorite job I have had was being a lifeguard at Sea World’s waterpark in Orlando, Florida. Since I am an education major, professionally I am passionate about helping others when I see they need it. I have learned how to do this with my past work experiences especially when I was a camp counselor and lifeguard. I have also have a passion for working with kids, which is why I chose the education field.

Getting Personal

Personally, I am passionate about my family, friends, dogs, and coffee. I enjoy going home and spending time with my parents even though it is not very often since they live in Florida now. I also enjoy going out to get coffee or food and catching up with friends. When I am not working, you can usually find me at home with friends watching Law and Order or any other crime show. When I am back home in either Hilton Head or Florida, you will always find me at the beach. My favorite way to spend a Sunday afternoon is at home relaxing with my roommates and my roommate’s dog. When I was in high school I did a lot of volunteer work with my swim team, but once I came to college I have not done much. There are many amazing nonprofit organizations out there, but my favorite is American Cancer Society because this one hits home since my mom had breast cancer when I was growing up. Since I was very little, I have competed on my local swim team where I won many medals over the years. I have also won a couple of academic awards back in high school.  Two things that are impossible for me to give up are coffee and talking to my mom. I love coffee and I can drink it all day. I do not understand people who do not drink coffee in the morning and are able to function throughout the day. I also could not give up talking to my mom. My mom is a nurse and I call her at least once a day for some medical or life advice for either a friend or myself. Someone would want to work with me because I am a hard worker, however some might find it hard to work with me since I am a procrastinator (which is probably why I am a hard worker because I wait to the last minute to start anything and have to rush to get it down on time).  I want to be remembered for my kindness and positivity that I give to others.

My Literature Experience

I took many English classes over the years, including AP Literature when I was a junior in high school. I took British Literature while at Clemson and I am currently enrolled in World Literature, however I do not know much about American Literature.  Unfortunately, I am not a big reader and often have to be forced to read, which means I have no had a good experience with it. One book that has impacted my life is Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families: Stories From Rwanda written by Philip Gourevitch, which I had to read last year in my African History class at Clemson.  This novel opened my eyes to the horrors that had happen during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. It is a non-fiction novel about Gourevitch’s travels in Rwanda after the genocide. He interviews survivor and reflects on the meaning of the genocide.  I believe there will be many benefits to taking this course, including learning how to make a website, working with teammates, and having a better understanding of American literature. I am excited to try this new type of teaching and look forward to this class!
